What To Do After a Facial

January 18, 20252 min read

Introduction

A facial’s results are only as good as how you maintain them—how you take care of your skin after leaving the treatment room is completely in your hands.

With that said, here are five essential steps to follow after your facial 💆‍♀️

1. Follow Your Esthetician's Recommendations

Regardless of the type of facial you received, your esthetician will provide a customized at-home care routine to maintain and maximize your results. These directions are based on your skin concerns, skin type, and the specific treatment you received.

For example, if you had a Chemical Peel, your esthetician will likely recommend a routine that keeps the skin calm, hydrated, and protected.

To get the best care possible, share as much information as you can about your skin, lifestyle, and expectations with your esthetician. A knowledgeable esthetician will work with you to help you achieve your best skin ever.

2. Wear Broad-Spectrum SPF

Since professional facials stimulate and detoxify the skin, it’s crucial to apply broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect the freshly treated skin.

Without proper protection, sun exposure can cause damage, negating the benefits of your facial. Always opt for a sunscreen with at least SPF 30.

3. Skip the Gym

Can you work out after a facial? It's best to wait at least 24 hours before hitting the gym. Sweating and increased circulation can overstimulate your skin, potentially leading to irritation.

For those who have had a Chemical Peel, avoid exercise for a longer period as advised by your esthetician.

4. Hold Off on Exfoliation

Give your skin a break from exfoliation for at least 48 hours after a facial. Your skin has already undergone professional exfoliation during your treatment, and over-exfoliating can lead to irritation and sensitivity.

For those who had a Chemical Peel, avoid exfoliation for at least 14 days, or follow your esthetician’s specific recommendations.

5. Be Gentle with Your Skin

When cleansing or exfoliating post-facial, use a gentle touch—no scrubbing or harsh movements. Your skin is more sensitive after a facial, so stick to non-irritating, non-comedogenic products.

You can wear makeup after a facial, but opt for fragrance-free, non-clogging formulas to prevent breakouts or irritation.
