Post Inflammatory Erythema (PIE)

How to Treat Post Inflammatory Erythema (PIE)

January 19, 20251 min read

What is PIE?

Post-Inflammatory Erythema (PIE) appears as red, pink, or purple blotches caused by trauma to the skin. This results from inflammation, dilation, and damage to tiny capillaries under the skin.

What Causes PIE?

The most common cause of PIE is acne, but other inflammatory skin conditions like insect bites, contact dermatitis, and eczema can also contribute. Avoiding picking or squeezing acne can help prevent PIE, as this can damage blood vessels.

Who is Most Prone to PIE?

PIE is more common in individuals with Fitzpatrick skin types 1-3, but all skin types can be affected. The lighter the skin, the more visible the erythema.

Topical Products for PIE

  • Sodium Hyaluronate – Helps keep the skin hydrated and healthy.

  • Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) – Boosts ceramides and fatty acids, stabilizing the skin barrier, reducing water loss, and providing anti-inflammatory benefits to reduce redness and clear pores.

Medical Treatments for PIE

  • Microneedling – Creates controlled micro-injuries, stimulating collagen production and eliminating red spots. Multiple treatments may be needed for best results.

  • Light Therapy – A painless, effective way to treat PIE, prevent P. acnes formation, and reduce inflammation. Suitable for at-home or in-clinic treatments.
